2011 Stone Foundation Repair Workshop
The MBPN will sponsor another hands on stone
foundation repair workshop to be located at the home of Keith and Pat Lundberg 5102 Bailey Rd. Diamondale, MI. It is scheduled for August
13th from 8:30 am to 4 pm.
19th
century barns were usually supported on lime mortared, stone foundations. Over
the years mortar exposed to the elements deteriorates and can leave foundation
stones un-stable. This condition can be repaired by replacing the deteriorated,
or lost mortar, in a process called “re-pointing”.
The basics of
re-pointing are fairly simple and can be learned and practiced by barn owners
willing to invest the time and energy. If you intend to hire someone to do your
foundation repair the workshop will still be valuable for the information, to
help in the selection of an appropriate contractor.
Participants
will learn about ingredients for a proper mortar mix for repair of 19th
century stone foundations, and the simple tools needed for re-pointing. Proper
procedures and techniques in re-pointing stone foundations will be
demonstrated. Participants will have ample opportunity to try out and practice
the skills they have seen demonstrated.
Please bring
water-proof gloves, safety glasses, knee pads, long pants and work shoes

membership)Lunch will be provided
