The Ellis Barn Festival - Featuring the MBPN Fall Conference

Michigan Barns in a Changing Landscape

Saturday, October 4, 2008 * 1 - 4pm
at the Ellis Barn at Springfield Oaks County Park.

Join us for a variety of family friendly events : Antique tractors, horse drawn hay rides, rope making, milling demonstrations, quilting, kids crafts, hay cart hands-on demo, 4-H animals, tours of the Ellis Barn and a barn dance.

Feature presentations on Michigan Barns in a Changing Landscape will be open to everyone and will include:

a. The Ellis Barn Story
b. Barns and Tourism in Oakland County
c. Michigan Barn Preservation Network
d. Sustainable Agriculture
e. Modern Building Codes and Historic Structure Preservation
f. Barn Evaluation for Saving Historic Barns

Old Barns and Country Roads
Luddington Area Barn Tour
Date: October 11, 2008
Time: 10:00 am - 4:00 PM

Tour highlights:
  1. Historic White Pine Village - view the restored Jorrison Dairy Barn complete with hand tool display and old farm equipment.
  2. Conrad Road barn visits - there are seven featured barns - a rebuilt barn after a 1939 fire, a barn that sits on the property of the former County Poor Farm, Cherry Hill Farm which is still has a working barn with a cattle herd and will have a horse drawn wagon for visitors to ride in and enjoy the farm scenery, a barn that was built from reclaimed ship lumber and is home of the Amber Elk Ranch and of course has an elk to see, a "re-purposed" barn that now serves as a sign painting business and the Conrad barn which the road is named after.
  3. Travel on to Scottville for the last Farmers Market of the season (I am sure they will have pumpkins galore!)
  4. The Old Engine Club will have their final antique tractor pull at their show grounds just outside of Scottville.
